NSF International

United States

With today’s focus on human health and well-being, NSF meets the needs of safety and quality for the dietary supplements industry. NSF ensures product and ingredient safety, giving both industry and consumers peace of mind through GMP compliance, accredited certification programs, testing services and training capabilities.

NSF has worked for over a decade with sports organizations, anti-doping agencies and supplement manufacturers to ensure supplement safety through testing and evaluating products to help ensure their quality and safety.

We led the development of the only American National Standard for dietary supplements (NSF/ANSI 173) and with NSF certification you can be sure that dietary supplements do not contain unacceptable levels of contaminants.

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) are guidelines that provide a system of processes, procedures and documentation to assure a product has the identity, strength, composition, quality and purity that appear on its label. These GMP requirements are listed in Section 8 of NSF/ANSI 173 which is the only American National Standard in the dietary supplement industry developed in accordance with the FDA’s 21 CFR part 111.

NSF International independently registers manufacturers as meeting GMP requirements. The program is open not just to manufacturers of dietary supplements but also to manufacturers of ingredients and raw materials, as well as distribution, warehousing and packaging companies, who want to demonstrate their commitment to public safety.

With knowledgeable staff and testing laboratories in the U.S., Europe and China, we have the expertise to evaluate the composition of dietary supplements and ingredients, including:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Herbs/botanicals
  • Amino acids
  • Sports supplements
  • Concentrates, metabolites, constituents and extracts

We recognize that each sample is unique and apply customized laboratory solutions and relevant, scientifically valid test methods. We assess methods and performance against quality control criteria including an evaluation of recovery from the sample. If a method does not meet the quality control criteria, we optimize it for the particular sample type.

We can also evaluate labels or material specifications to select the tests to perform, assuring that your products and ingredients meet the necessary safety and quality requirements.

NSF's testing laboratory in Shanghai complements our certification services in China while providing a means to source safer products, raw materials and ingredients from Asia through independent, third-party testing and certification.

NSF International's Certified for Sport® program was created to meet the growing demands of athletes, coaches and all those concerned about banned substances in sports supplements. The program certifies that what is on the label is in the bottle and that the product does not contain unsafe levels of contaminants, prohibited substances and masking agents.

Our scientists screen sports supplements for more than 270 banned or prohibited substances including:

  • Narcotics
  • Steroids
  • Stimulants
  • Hormones
  • Related substances along with diuretics and other masking agents

We also monitor prohibited substances lists, such as the WADA, NFL and MLB lists, on an ongoing basis.

Certification also means that supplement manufacturers and their suppliers have met our stringent independent certification process. The guidelines were developed through a consensus process involving regulatory, sports industry and consumer groups.

Training is essential for maintaining high standards of quality assurance and compliance to good manufacturing practices (GMPs). GMP regulations clearly state that employees involved in manufacturing, packaging, labeling or holding of dietary supplements must be trained in their respective role in maintaining compliance to 21 CFR 111.

We support the dietary supplement industry worldwide by providing high-quality training on a variety of topics instrumental to understanding regulations and critical to achieving or maintaining regulatory compliance. Our comprehensive training approach goes far beyond just content delivery. Our instructors’ extensive industry expertise provides tangible, real-world case studies of workplace situations and one-on-one interaction.
