Astaxanthin for Food – AstaReal Natural Astaxanthin
The original astaxanthin company
As the first company in the world to commercially cultivate astaxanthin, and the first company to produce an astaxanthin supplement, AstaReal are the original pioneers of natural astaxanthin.
Global leaders in quality
AstaReal astaxanthin was the standard used to develop both the USP's FCC & DSC monographs. AstaReal is the only company supplying a USP-verified natural astaxanthin ingredient, and this is just the latest in a long line of quality certifications from respected certification and regulatory bodies, including halal, kosher, sports use, and animal supplementation certification.
FDA GRAS Notification & FDA NDI Notification
AstaReal® astaxanthin received its official no-objection letter from the FDA on January 6, 2010 and is GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) for use as an ingredient in the food categories of baked goods, beverages, cereals, chewing gum, coffee, tea, dairy product analogs, frozen dairy desserts and mixes, hard candy, milk products, processed fruits and fruit juices, processed vegetables and vegetable juices and soft candy at a use level to provide 0.1 milligram (mg) astaxanthin per serving.
Global leaders in clinical research
In 2018, the AstaReal Group celebrates 30 years of research and innovation. Having studied the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis since 1988, the company is at the forefront of the natural astaxanthin industry. Throughout the last three decades, AstaReal has not only dedicated itself to producing high-quality natural astaxanthin products, but also to investing in extensive clinical research. As a result, the organisation is globally recognised as an authority in natural astaxanthin science with a portfolio of nearly 60 human clinical trials – making AstaReal® the most widely researched brand of natural astaxanthin on the market.
Unrivaled cultivation technology for superior natural astaxanthin products
In the early 1990s, we developed a highly advanced and one-of-a-kind technology using specially designed photobioreactors to cultivate the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis.
The cultivation process starts in the laboratory, where a seed culture is cultivated under sterile conditions to provide a pure culture. The culture is enriched with essential nutrients and light that allows for optimal growth and proliferation (green phase). When the culture reaches its optimal density in the green phase, it is transferred to our unique stainless steel photobioreactors where the production of astaxanthin (red phase) is initiated. After the algae have reached maturity, they are harvested, crushed and dried. The final biomass is a deep-red powder of high purity, containing a high concentration of astaxanthin. The biomass can be further refined to produce a range of bulk products that are suitable for different product formats and formulations.
A wealth of health benefits for both humans and companion animals
Since 1994, AstaReal’s natural astaxanthin has been researched in over 140 published studies including 70 clinical trials. The results have shown that natural astaxanthin helps promote such areas as joint health, eye health, skin health, cardiovascular health, anti-fatigue, general cognitive function, sleep, and muscle endurance. The results have also shown parallel results with improvement in immune function, endurance, coat health, eye health, sleep and general well-being in companion animals.
The most powerful, natural antioxidant
Astaxanthin is the most powerful naturally occurring antioxidant, shown to be 6,000 times more potent than Vitamin C and 800 times more potent than CoQ10 (Nishida Y. et al., 2007.) Some antioxidants, like vitamin C, can exhibit prooxidant behavior in the presence of high concentrations of free radicals or redox-active metals (Carocho M. et al.,2013.) Astaxanthin however does not exhibit prooxidant properties, making it a safer and healthier antioxidant option (Martin H.D. et al., 1999.) Astaxanthin is one of the few carotenoids that can cross the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retinal barrier, adding a level of protection to the brain and eyes as well (Guerin M. et al., 2003.) Astaxanthin has also been shown to reduce levels of circulating C-Reactive Protein in the blood, which is a marker of systemic inflammation correlated with a risk for heart disease in humans (Park J.S. et al., 2010.)
