Sialyllactose (SL) and other Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs)
Sialyllactose (SL) is an abundant milk oligosaccharide in human milk possessing physiologically beneficial health benefits such as prebiotic effect, brain and cognitive development, immune modulation, etc. Human milk contains two isomers of sialyllactose, 3’-sialyllactose (3’-SL) and 6’-sialyllactose (6’-SL). The concentration of 3’-SL in human milk remains relatively stable throughout lactation whereas 6’-SL gradually decreases from colostrum to mature milk.
GeneChem Inc. is the only company that manufactures 3’-SL and 6’-SL in bulk quantities for commercial use in food and beverages.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a GRAS (generally regarded as safe) ‘No objection letter’, for GeneChem’s 3’-sialyllactose sodium salt (3’-SL), qualifying it for use in food and beverages.
Similarly, GeneChem Inc.’s 6’-sialyllactose sodium salt (6’-SL) has received self-affirmed GRAS notification by an independent panel of experts through scientific procedure following stringent US FDA safety criteria.
Physiologically beneficial effects of SLs:
- Prebiotic effect
- Brain and cognitive development
- Prevention of pathogens
- Immune modulation, etc.
